Real Men Seek Help: Our Commitment to Men’s Mental Health

June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and we are taking this opportunity to talk about something that doesn’t always get enough attention: men asking for help.
At The Women’s Center, contrary to what our name suggests, we serve EVERYONE. Men, women, and families of all backgrounds come through our doors every year seeking support.
In fact, we have three male therapists on staff and in 2025, served 204 men with vital mental health services.
The truth is: seeking help takes courage. And for many men, it takes even more.
The numbers tell a sobering story. Nearly 1 in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, yet only 42% of male-identifying individuals receive treatment for any mental health issue, compared to 57% of female-identifying individuals.
And while men account for nearly 80% of suicides, many never seek support at all. Certain masculinity norms, such as toughness and stoicism, are linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and resistance to seeking help.
Paul’s Story
Paul* first came to us while experiencing intense anxiety and regular panic attacks. Like many men who walk through our doors, he was initially guarded, not quite ready to open up about what was really going on beneath the surface.
But over time, as trust built between Paul and his therapist, something shifted. He began to share more about a difficult relationship with his elderly mother, the grief of losing his sister, and patterns in his relationships he hadn’t fully examined before. Slowly, the walls came down.
Together, they worked on practical skills for managing anxiety, becoming more mindful, and learning to pause instead of reacting. Recently, Paul felt confident enough to reduce his sessions to once a month. He now trusts himself to regulate his emotions and use the tools he’s built through therapy.
That’s what healing looks like, and it all started with one courageous step: asking for help.
