The Women’s Center Expands Adolescent Mental Health Program with Virginia Health Care Foundation Grant
Vienna, VA, September 16, 2021
The Women’s Center, a Northern Virginia-based nonprofit providing mental health services to disadvantaged community members, today announced it was awarded a three-year grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) to support the formalization of the Center’s Adolescent Mental Health Program.
The grant will enable The Women’s Center to expand access to care by providing dedicated resources for quality mental health counseling and shortening the waitlist for adolescent clients. The Women’s Center will formalize partnerships with schools, parent organizations, nonprofits, faith communities, and government.
“As the pandemic intensified emotional, physical and social pressures on young people, The Women’s Center saw a 21% increase in requests for adolescent counseling services in the past year, “ said Rachna Krishnan, CEO and Executive Director of The Women’s Center. “ Thanks to generous funding from VHCF, we will be able to support around 684 new adolescents struggling with mental health issues.”
The grant will fund 6,025 sessions over three years, expanding The Women’s Center’s adolescent services by 81%. Of these new adolescents served, approximately 344 (35%) will be middle school students, with about 213 being low-income, uninsured and at-risk youths.
The Women’s Center’s Adolescent Mental Health Program uses a youth-focused, integrated model for early intervention that includes individual, family, and group mental health counseling. The program aims to resolve emotional issues and support adolescents toward healthy coping skills, problem-solving and positive relationships.
The Women’s Center’s primary goal is to provide the highest quality, culturally and linguistically sensitive, coordinated mental health care to every client, regardless of their ability to pay. Teens and families looking for mental health services can make an appointment for adolescent and teen counseling here.
VHCF is an initiative established by the Virginia General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care and Chaired by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.
