SUMMARY:Domestic Violence: what is it and what you can do about it?
DESCRIPTION:What does domestic violence and family abuse look like? Could it be happening to you or someone you know? What stops those who experience family abuse from getting the help they need? What are the barriers to getting help? Why is it so difficult to understand\, identify\, and even harder to stop? What are some of the options and resources in the community (including the protective order process)? \nIf any of these questions have crossed your mind\, join us for a session that will help you identify and learn how to most effectively deal with the pattern of coercive behaviors associated with family abuse\, including (but not limited to) physical and sexual violence\, threats of violence\, emotional and psychological intimidation\, verbal abuse\, economic and financial control\, spiritual abuse\, and destruction of property. During the presentation\, a survivor/advocate will tell her story and share her experiences. The protective order process from intake through trial will be reviewed. She practices law exclusively in Virginia and does not practice in Maryland or the District of Columbia. \nIn this program\, Patti: \n\nProvides practical information on how to establish a separation and process a divorce.\nDescribes and compares different methods of reaching an out-of-court settlement using mediation\, negotiation and/or collaboration techniques.\nOffers strategies that will allow you to effectively prepare for your settlement discussions.\nProvides tips and recommendations to keep your settlement discussions productive and efficient.\nPlease note that one section of this program (total 6 sections) is Virginia-specific and not applicable to DC or MD residents.\n\nThings to know: \n\nRegister early\nA minimum of 5 participants is required for workshop. DESCRIPTION:Learn all about the collaborative law process for resolving divorce or other family law-related situations. Learn about this new process which is based on self-determination\, and has been described as the “kinder\, gentler divorce” avoiding court where possible. \nThe workshop will walk through what the collaborative process is\, the benefits\, and how it differs from other legal processes. \nPlease note that the details of this program will not be tailored to any one specific case. The presentation will include legal information. The presenter cannot provide specific legal advice for ethical reasons. \nPLEASE NOTE: WORKSHOP IS IN PERSON AT THE WOMENS CENTER IN VIENNA\, VA \nAbout the Presenter \nCatherine “Kate” Reese is a family law attorney with 26 years of experience (MD\, VA\, DC licensed)\, a master’s in counseling\, and extensive training in collaborative law and mediation. She focuses her practice on the full spectrum of family law matters and has extensive experience in equitable distribution of assets\, child and spousal support\, and custodial time\, as well as the negotiation and preparation of prenuptial\, postnuptial and marital settlement agreements. \nWhen Kate identifies matters that can be resolved more amicably and without contested litigation costs\, she highly recommends alternate dispute resolution options such as mediation and collaborative law. As a Virginia Supreme Court Certified Family Law mediator and mentor\, she is able to negotiate the best possible outcomes for her clients\, helping them reach out-of-court resolutions whenever possible.
