CEU Training: Trauma, Violence & Abuse – Clinical Implications & Treatment Strategies

• Participants will be able to understand the cycle of violence and how domestic violence manifests in a clinical setting
• Participants will be able to describe classic symptoms of trauma and complex trauma as they relate to domestic violence and/or sexual assault
• Participants will learn the unique combination of skills that are needed with working clinically with victims of domestic abuse, violence, and sexual assault.
Domestic Violence 101: Topics covered are the power and control wheel, manifestations of violence cycle, barriers to leaving, risk/danger assessment, options counseling, safety planning, protective order process, resources and the role of an advocate.
Clinical Implications and Treatment of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault: Topics covered are dynamics of coercive power and control in intimate partner relationships and the long term impact of chronic relational disempowerment, the brain’s response to trauma, and how to recognize trauma and complex trauma symptoms.
Information about therapeutic goals and how to recognize and overcome common barriers to treatment will be shared. Key factors to building resiliency will be shared. The clinical skills necessary to provide effective therapy and services will be discussed and experienced.
